Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe - Hawiku Old Zuni Pueblo

<- Back to New Mexico Series

Zuni, New Mexico

The original mission church was built around 1632 and it too was almost totally destroyed in the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.  It like many of the other Pueblo churches has heavy, adobe walls, often 3-4’ thick at the base.  The structure is distinguished by its large twin bell towers with corner crenellations.  It is most well known for its contemporarytwice life-sized dancing Kachina figures on the walls of the nave.  They also show up in the drawer assemblage of PJ Cardinale.
